The downstream end of the Nigerian petroleum industry has gone into a frenzy as operators respond to the immediate removal of subsidy on petrol with a sharp hike in pump price just as consumers crowded to the petrol stations. Commercial transporters have also hiked their trip fares across the country in response to the developments. On his inaugural speech yesterday, the new president, Bola Tinubu, had stated that “petroleum subsidy is gone”.Some marketers responded by increasing their prices by about 100 percent to N370 from N185 per litre. However, few other stations especially the major marketers, sold between N195 and N220 per litre across Lagos and Abuja. Our findings also showed that some of the petrol stations operators simply shut their filling stations, thus leading to the emergence of long queues. The Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, UK, has sentenced former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, to nine years and eight months in prison for organ trafficking.  The court also sentenced his wife, Beatrice, to four years and six months jail term. The doctor helping the couple out, Dr Obinna Obeta was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Recall that on March 23, the court found Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and their doctor, Obinna Obeta, guilty of trafficking a trader from Nigeria to the UK to harvest his organ, a crime under the United Kingdom Modern Slavery act 2015. The jury held that they conspired to bring the 21-year-old to London to exploit him for his kidney.The verdict is the first of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 of the UK.   A 15-year-old student of Bishop Otubelu Juniorate, Trans Ekulu, Enugu, Lotanna Azuokeke, who sat for the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, reportedly scored 99 marks in Mathematics.  Dr Chiwuike Uba, Media Adviser to the Bishop of the Diocese of Nike (Anglican Communion), the Founder of the school said Azuokeke, a native of Ọba in the Idemmili South LGA of Anambra State, scored a total of 337 marks in the examination; 88 marks in Chemistry, 86 in Physics, and 64 in the English Language. The statement read;  “Azụokeke broke record set by Chidera Obi who scored 329 marks to emerge overall best, five years ago. “Report shows that Azuokeke applied to study Electrical/Electronics Engineering at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.”

  According to naijanews:  The  National Agency for food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said that importation of Indomie noodles to Nigeria has been banned following allegations of a cancer-causing chemical found in the noodles and non-registration of the agency. Health officials in Malaysia and Taiwan recently detected ethylene oxide, a compound in Indomie’s “special chicken” flavour noodles. Ethylene oxide is a colourless, odourless gas that is used to sterilise medical devices and spices and is said to be a cancer-causing chemical. The ministry of health in Malaysia noted that it examined 36 samples of instant noodles from different brands since 2022 and found that 11 samples contained ethylene oxide. Both countries have since recalled the product. According to Linda ikeji blog :The Central Bank of Nigeria has called on the public to reject reports suggesting a withdrawal of the recently redesigned Naira notes from circulation. In a released notice, signed by the acting Director of corporate communication, Isa AbdulMumim on Sunday, April 30 the bank stated that the speculation is a ploy by some people to cause panic among members of the public. The bank reiterated that the old and new notes have been circulating side by side as they have been taking good delivery of a good quantity of the redesigned notes from the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting company Limited. It was also stated that the bank would remain committed to supplying the approved indent for the smooth running of the economy.   A final list of candidates for the Anambra Governorship election has been released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).    National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye who made the announcement on Thursday October 7, said 18 registered political parties will be participating in the election. Okoye also revealed that INEC will be holding an emergency consultative meeting on Friday, October 8, with the leadership of all registered political parties in Abuja.   Veteran actor, Chiwetalu Agu, who was arrested by the Nigerian Army on Wednesday, October 7, for adorning an outfit with the Biafran flag on it, has been released.   He was released today October 8, after the leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria mediated.     

  Dr. Chike Akunyili Obumneme, a son of the murdered Dr. Chike Akunyili has described how his father was killed by the yet-to-be-identified persons. The medical doctor and widower of a late Minister of Information, Dora Akunyili, was killed on Monday evening when he was returning from a commemorative lecture in honour of his late wife, Dora. The Police Command in Anambra State, where the incident happened, has vowed to unravel the brains behind the murder. Speaking with the BBC Igbo, Obumneme said that his dad was shot in the face by gunmen who opened fire on his vehicle at Nkpor, Anambra State. “His driver and a Police officer assigned to him also died in the shooting. A cousin survived and is being treated in hospital,” Obumneme added. They were driving back from the town of Nsukka in Enugu state after attending a lecture hosted by the University of Nigeria to pay tribute to the late NAFDAC DG, Dora.

  84-year-old Kenyan man, Peter Oyuk, is disappointed after returning home to find that the two wives he abandoned 47 years ago have remarried.   According to The Standard, the octogenarian had walked out of his Makale village in Malava, Kakamega county in 1974 at aged 37.   He told his people that he was going in search of greener pastures because he needed to take care of two wives and five children, although details of where he was headed and his expected return date were scanty.   Oyuka visited Kakamega in 1983, 1992 and 1996, but never set foot in his home despite being in close proximity to the family. After waiting for many years, his wives moved on and remarried.    On Tuesday, September 21, Oyuka returned to his village where only a few individuals could recognise him.   The Nigerian Naira hit a new time low on Wednesday September 15, as it is now exchanging between N562 and N570 for 1$ in parallel markets.    Though data recorded on the FMDQ securities exchange window where forex is officially traded, showed that the naira closed at N412.06 per $1 at the official window on Wednesday September 15, the same rate it exchanged on Tuesday September 14, walk-in customers exchanged between N562 to N567 for $1. Similarly, checks in Kano, Kaduna and Lagos showed that the prices fluctuated between N564 and N570/1$.   Some BDCs confirmed huge demand for forex at the moment with some of the operators disclosing that most of the demands were from SMEs that were having difficulty accessing forex from banks.   The forex turnover remained unchanged with $175.10 million recorded at the spot market, the same rate posted in the previous session on Tuesday.   The domestic unit hit an intraday high of N400.00 an...
