Suarez begins training at Barcelona

BARCELONA (AFP) – All eyes were on Luis Suarez as he trained with his Barcelona team-mates for the first time on Friday after getting the green light from the Court of Arbitration for Sport In a short statement on their website, the club said: “Luis Suarez was the centre of attention this Friday morning at the first team training session at the Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper. Ebola: Experimental drug developed by Nigerian arrives Nigeria today

An experimental drug developed by a Nigerian in diaspora for the treatment of Ebola  arrive the country yesterday, the Minister for Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said.   The drug, called “Nanosilver”, has been approved for use by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an experimental treatment ethical in the case of the Ebola epidemic. Lagos doctor confirmed to have Ebola as nurse who escaped from quarantine is returned back to Lagos

A doctor who attended to late Patrick Sawyer at the First Consultant Hospital has been confirmed positive with the Ebola virus. Speaking at a news conference today, the Nigerian Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said the doctor is currently undergoing treatment at the quarantine centre in Lagos. Prof Onyebuchi revealed  that some of the 169 secondary contacts of Sawyer were no longer under surveillance and had been released, having completed the 21 days of incubation period.  The Minister also said the nurse who had escaped the quarantine center in Lagos and traveled to Enugu state has been returned back to Lagos with her husband in a special traveling ambulance. 'In Enugu day before yesterday, there were 21 secondary contacts with the nurse. But after investigations, there are only 6 secondary contacts now. 46 year old Alexander Ilesanmi (pictured above), an indigene of Akure, Ondo state has been arrested by the Lagos State Police command for parading himself as an Assistant Commissioner of Police and receiving stolen vehicles from robbery suspects. According to police reports, Illesanmi, who goes about dressing in police uniform with the rank of a Deputy police commissioner displayed on his shirt, was arrested after an apprehended notorious car snatcher and supposed pastor of a church, Gabriel Asaolu, identified him to be one of those who bought stolen cars from him. Continue... Investigations by the police revealed that Ilesanmi had bought two stolen cars, a Mitsubishi Montero and a Toyota Avalon from the suspect before he was arrested. How Lagos nursing mother got infected with Ebola virus - doctor

A medical doctor has described how a nursing mother who is one of the confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in Lagos contracted the disease while attending her antenatal care at First Consultant Hospital in Obalende, Lagos where the first victim of Ebola virus in Nigeria, Patrick Sawyerr, died. The lady was confirmed to have the deadly disease after testing positive at the NNPC staff clinic on Muri Okunola street in the Victoria Island area of Lagos. Speaking anonymously with Punch, the doctor said; 'The lady attended ante-natal at First Consultant prior to the arrival of the Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer. She was delivered of her baby at the hospital after which she was discharged. A few weeks later, Mr. Sawyer came around and was attended to by health workers. He was first treated for malaria, then typhoid, before there was high index of suspicion. He tested positive for Ebola and died. Nigerian passenger causes panic in turkey

The Ebola scare got wider yesterday, with Turkey putting a Nigerian under watch and President Goodluck Jonathan calling for concerted efforts against the deadly disease . The Nigerian, who arrived in Istanbul, Turkey yesterday, created panic when she fell ill aboard a Turkish Airlines plane flying from Lagos to Istanbul. It  prompted authorities to take measures against a possible case of the Ebola virus. The 32-year-old woman reportedly fell ill to fever and vomited during the flight before the pilot demanded paramedics’ attention. Paramedics working under the General Directorate of Health for Borders and Coasts delivered the first treatment to the woman on the plane. She and her three-year-old son were later taken to the hospital for further examination. Spanish priest with Ebola treated with experimental serum, Zmapp

The 75 year old Spanish priest who was infected with the Ebola virus in Liberia is being treated with the new experimental drug, Zmapp, which was used to treat two US missionary doctors infected with the virus. The Spanish government claimed yesterday that the drug was imported from Geneva and doctors have begun to administer it on Fr. Miguel Pajares at Madrid’s La Paz-Carlos III hospital where he is in isolation. The first person to be treated with the serum, Dr. Kent Brantly, saw his condition improve after being given Zmapp. Since his treatment began, Fr. Pajares is said to be in stable condition, no longer has fever, and hasn't any hemorrhaging. Doctors believe that his condition will greatly improve in the coming days. Two Died Trying To Prevent Ebola By Drinking Salt Water

Two people were found dead yesterday, August 8, in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, after allegedly drinking salt water and warm bath with salt to prevent Ebola infection. And about 20 people were hospitalised in various hospitals in Plateau. According to the Vangard, the deceased whose identities could not be ascertained at the time of this report were hypertension patients. A resident who worships in the same St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hwolshe, with one of the deceased, Atang Itse, confirmed she died "this evening as a result of salt she took in the night when everyone was bathing and drinking salt water." The source added the other victim was a taxi driver who plied Jos city and neighbouring local government areas. GEJ declares national emergency on Ebola, approves N1.9b special intervention fund

Below is the State House press release... President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Friday in Abuja declared the control and containment of the Ebola virus in Nigeria, a National Emergency. Accordingly, the President has directed the Federal Ministry of Health to work in collaboration with the State Ministries of Health, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to ensure that all possible steps are taken to effectively contain the threat of the Ebola virus  in line with international protocols and best practices. President Jonathan also approved a Special Intervention Plan and the immediate release of N1. 9 billion for its implementation, to further strengthen on-going steps to contain the virus such as the establishment of additional isolation centres, case management, contact tracing, deployment of additional personnel, screening at borders, and the procurement of required items and facilities....

US sends more staff to Nigeria in response to Ebola

US health authorities said Friday they are sending extra personnel and resources to Nigeria, which has declared a national emergency as it battles a deadly outbreak of Ebola for the first time. “We are starting to ramp up our staffing in Lagos,” US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Tom Skinner told AFP. “We are really concerned about Lagos and the potential for spread there, given the fact that Lagos — and Nigeria for that matter — has never seen Ebola.” Nigeria became the fourth West African country involved in the largest Ebola outbreak in history when a dual US-Liberian citizen who was infected with Ebola traveled by plane to Lagos on July 20. He died five days later. Eight people who came in contact with him have been diagnosed with Ebola, and two have died. Ebola has killed 932 people in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria since March, and has infected more than 1,700 according to the World Health Organization.
